The small village of San Piero in Campo is just 5 km from Hotel Baia Imperiale. It is a historic village famous for its extraction activity in the local granite quarries.
The original core of the village is still recognizable, it is characterizes by alleys, granite staircases and balconies of a typical medieval appearance.
Although the activity of the quarries has been extinct for a long time, extraction sites are still accessible along special nature trails. Many of them start right from the center of the village and develop uphill to the quarries and mountain shelters used by local shepherds.
The most impressive hikes are those that take place on the Vie del Granito. These are naturalistic itineraries of incredible beauty that depart from the village of San Piero, from the beach of Cavoli and the area of Vallebuia.
These trails allow you to discover and appreciate by foot some of the most authentic places on the island. Walking you will also encounter several buildings and several blocks of granite half sculpted. Some are old for centuries, dating back to Pisan domination.
The granite of Elba, coming from the quarries of these places, has been used throughout Italy and in particular in the columns of the Pantheon in Rome and in the Church of San Michele in Pisa.
